| Floods cause distress and damage wherever they happen and flooding from rivers, estuaries and the sea threatens many communities in Scotland. A number of damaging floods have occurred in recent years: Perth 2003, East Dunbartonshire 1994, Edinburgh 2000, Glasgow 2002 and Hawick in 2005. In 1997 and 2002 severe flood events inundated up to 600 residential and 170 commercial properties and disrupted transport infrastructure with estimated combined damages of £100 million. | "I've seen first-hand the devastating impact that flooding can have on homes and businesses. Scotland has suffered around 90 major floods in the last decade alone - incidents predicted to become more frequent with the onslaught of climate change. Improving our understanding of flood risk, finding ways to manage it and improving our response are vital to minimise impact on individuals, the environment and the economy."
